Out in the forest it's easy to spot the American Beech tree, even in the winter when most trees have lost their leaves. The beech tree can be easily identified by not only it's smooth slate gray trunk but by it retaining its leaves through the winter (especially the younger ones). Sit quietly and you'll be able to hear the rattle as the wind brushes through the beech leaves.
